Case Study One
PROJECT: Kingston Quay
CLIENT: Barratt West Scotland
Full structural consultancy service for new build development of
eight storey modern executive style apartments. The
development includes a communal courtyard and basement car
parking throughout to serve the 372 homes.
The structure consists of a structural steel frame with concrete
floors on the upper levels and a reinforced concrete sub
structure, basement and capping slab.
Extensive retention works both permanent and temporary have
been developed within the basement area to retain the
surrounding adoptable roads.
Case Study Two
PROJECT: Leverndale Redevelopment, Sector C
CLIENT: Miller Homes
This project required DBA to carry out the structural design
work for 3 very different multi-storey residential blocks. Block A
was a traditional pre-cast block on reinforced concrete strip
foundations. Block B was of timber framed construction on
reinforced strip foundations. Finally Block C was a five storey
block made up of a steel frame for the lower three floors with a
two storey timber kit block on top of this.
This block was to be
supported on a piled foundation with reinforced ground beams.
Block C in particular proved to be a challenging task for the
design team, with many of the challenges arising due to strict
planning requirements which were imposed by Glasgow City
Council.
The aim was therefore to produce a design which could
meet with these requirements but remain profitable for the
client. For this reason the part steel frame, part timber frame
was selected even though it was far from the simplest solution.
Case Study Three
PROJECT: Riverside Point, Braehead, Renfrewshire
CLIENT: Redrow Homes
Situated in the new residential zone of the prestigious Braehead
development, this project represents Redrows flagship Scottish
development. DBA were employed to carry out and certify (SER) all
elements of Structural design associated with the project.
This started with the foundation design. The site investigation
indicated that due to the low bearing capacity found on site that the
ground would need to be improved our piled foundations adopted.
DBA organised tenders from piling contractors and ground
improvement specialists. It was decided that the ground could be
suitably improved using vibro-compaction, which provided a
substantial cost saving over piling. Foundations were then designed
for each house based on the improved ground.
DBA were also required to carry out detailed structural designs for
some complex bespoke details which were being employed by the
client due to the high profile of the project. SER certification was
provided for all of the super structure designs on the site.
